State of AI Search: How the Engines Cite

"Getting cited by AI" is treated as one thing. It isn't. Across the six major answer engines, whether an answer cites a source at all, how many it uses, which domains it reaches for, and how much it leans on a handful of them all vary enormously. We measured each of those four things from cloro's live monitoring.

Published July 6, 2026 · cloro monitoring corpus · a single dated snapshot, not a recurring series

This was our first read of AI citation behavior, on a prompt mix that skews commercial. For the current numbers, re-measured each quarter on a fixed, topic-balanced query set, see the AI Search Index.

Key findings

Gemini: 41%

Gemini cites a source on just 41% of its answers. The rest are unsourced. Every other conversational engine cites on 95–98%. If you optimize for citations, most Gemini answers have no citation to win in the first place.

YouTube #1

The single most-cited domain across AI answers is YouTube, ahead of Google and Reddit. Social and user-generated platforms, rather than publishers, sit at the top of what AI reaches for, so much of the citable surface is not your own site.

AI Mode: 58%

Google AI Mode draws 58% of all its citations from just 10 domains, overwhelmingly Google's own properties. It's the most concentrated engine; Gemini and Copilot spread widest (~17%), leaving an outside site the most room.

21 → 12

The engines that cite the most also got terser over the quarter: ChatGPT's citations per answer fell from ~21 to ~12, Google AI Mode's from ~21 to ~10, which leaves fewer slots to earn.

1. Does the engine cite at all? On Gemini, usually not

Before "how many sources," there's a prior question: does the answer cite anything? For most engines the answer is almost always yes, but not for Gemini, which returns a source on well under half its answers. Google AI Overview sits lower too, because it only cites when it appears at all. A blended "AI citation rate" describes neither case, so set the target per engine.

2. How many sources per answer: the citable slots are shrinking

When they do cite, engines differ ~5×: ChatGPT backs an answer with about a dozen sources, Gemini with two or three. The number is also moving: the chattiest engines compressed sharply over Q2–Q3 2026 toward the ~10 band, while the already-lean engines barely budged. Each source is a slot: as the count falls, a page beats more rivals to hold one.

Only Copilot ended the quarter citing more than it started; five of six cut back. Grok is excluded: it cited ~54 sources per answer through mid-May, then left the tracked panel, so it has no quarter-end figure.

3. What AI actually cites: platforms, not publishers

Pool the cited domains across the conversational engines and the top of the list is social and user-generated platforms rather than traditional publishers. YouTube leads by a wide margin, followed by Google and Reddit. Getting mentioned in a video or a Reddit thread is a different job from ranking your own site.

Caveat, stated plainly: cloro's monitored prompt mix skews commercial, so product and retail domains (IKEA, Shopify, Nike, and similar) are over-represented here versus a neutral query set. The platform sources (YouTube, Google, Reddit, Instagram, Facebook) lead regardless of that skew, and they are the part we would expect to hold up elsewhere.

Each engine has a citation personality

ChatGPT

Reddit first, then independent tech and review publishers (TechRadar, Forbes, Tom's Guide, Consumer Reports).

Google AI Mode

Google's own ecosystem: YouTube, Google, Instagram, Facebook. By far the most concentrated engine.

Perplexity

YouTube first by a wide margin, then brand and retail sites.

Copilot

The most commerce-heavy — IKEA, Nike, H&M, Amazon, Walmart lead its list.

Gemini

The most diverse spread of any engine, though it cites a source on only 41% of answers.

4. How concentrated is each engine? AI Mode leans hardest on a few domains

Concentration is the share of an engine's citations that comes from just its top 10 domains. High concentration means the engine leans on a small, predictable set of sources; low means it spreads across a long tail. Google AI Mode is the outlier: more than half its citations come from ten domains, most of them Google's. Concentration is the room outside the top ten: on AI Mode you compete for what Google's properties leave; on Gemini and Copilot a specialist page has a real chance.

What this means: pick your engine, then optimize for how it cites

"AI search visibility" collapses six very different behaviors into one phrase. On Gemini, the fight is often to get a citation to exist at all. On Google AI Mode, the citable surface is dominated by Google's own properties, which is a hard set to break into from outside. On ChatGPT and Perplexity, there are a dozen slots per answer, but the number is shrinking, so the bar to earn one keeps rising. And across all of them, the sources that show up most are platforms like YouTube and Reddit rather than the publisher homepages most SEO strategies target.

So pick the engine that matters for your audience and optimize for how it actually cites. A strategy tuned to ChatGPT's dozen publisher-and-forum citations will miss on Gemini's sparse answers, and miss again on AI Mode's Google-owned set.

Methodology

All figures come from cloro's production monitoring corpus via Redash. Citation presence (share of answers with ≥1 source) and citations per answer are read from the populated source-count field: presence over a recent 3-day window (~4,600–6,100 answers per engine), and the per-answer trend from the MAR-149 weekly panel over a 120-day window (Mar 9 – Jul 6, 2026). Cited domains and concentration are extracted from each answer's source list over a 3-day window (9,400–25,100 citation instances per engine). Google AI Overview is excluded from the domain and concentration cuts because its citations are organic result links rather than an answer-level source list. Because the customer prompt mix shifts and skews commercial, read the levels as directional and the cross-engine differences and trends as the signal.

Questions this study answers

What share of AI answers cite at least one source?

Over a three-day window of cloro's monitoring corpus: Copilot 97.8%, Google AI Mode 97.8%, ChatGPT 97.6%, Perplexity 95.0%, Google AI Overview 72.8%, and Gemini 41.3%. Four engines cite on almost every answer; the AI Overview and Gemini do not.

Are AI engines citing fewer sources than they used to?

Yes, and sharply, between March and June 2026. ChatGPT went from 21.4 sources per answer to 12.3, Google AI Mode from 20.6 to 9.7, Google AI Overview from 13.0 to 9.6, and Gemini from 4.4 to 2.5. Perplexity held near 10 and Copilot near 4.5. Fewer slots per answer means each citation is harder to win.

Which AI engine relies on the fewest sources?

Google AI Mode: 57.8% of its citations come from its top 10 domains, more than twice the concentration of Perplexity (27.3%) or ChatGPT (25.1%). Copilot (18.3%) and Gemini (17.3%) spread their citations widest. A brand outside AI Mode's top-10 set is competing for less than half of its citation volume.
